Team Stair Climb

Competitive and non-competitive climbs

There are 2 main stair climbing race formats:
  1. Time trial - climbers are sent off at separate time intervals (usually 10 sec) and are chip-timed based upon finish time minus start time. The majority of US climbs use this format, as it allows for 100s or 1000s of participants.
  2. Mass start - where all climbers line up on the start line together and run a short distance before entering the stairwell. This approach is used for competitive/elite only races.

Time trial format climbs

The time trial format climbs are the most common in the US, and used by the Charity based climbs because they allow thousands of participants to climb over a period of several hours. Given the opportunity for congestion in the stairwell and the need to pass slower climbers, many races will separate the competitive climbers into an earlier wave. Therefore, if you are looking for a (relatively) clear stairwell - then you should opt for the competitive wave. The competitive wave will typically still use the time trial format. If your climb doesn't have a competitive wave - talk to us to see if we can work with your local race organizers.

Mass start climbs

Mass start events are the minority, and typically only for the competitive (non-charity) events. In the US, the Empire State Building Run Up is such an example. Outside of the US, such as Europe or Australia - these competitive/elite events are more common. The event may also add a time-trial climb for the non-competitive climbers.

If you want to see what one of these mass start events looks like? Take a look at the vintage clip on the right - the 1995 Rialto Run Up in Melbourne Australia.

Remember - this is not representative of a typical stair climb.
